Located on the beautiful Devonshire peninsular within the South Hams estuary, Gullet Farm is nestled on a hillside that accommodates some of the county’s lushest, sea-sweetened pastures. It’s this land, organically kept, with its own mild microclimate, that nourishes our cherished flocks of sheep.
We are guardians to some of Britain’s most striking breeds including Romneys, Black Welsh Mountains and Shetland sheep, who provide us with soft, sumptuous wool that is sustainably produced and completely unique to Gullet Farm.
Sustainable farming and inviting nature to flourish
Our organic status is of huge importance to us here at Gullet Farm. Not only is it part of our legacy, handed down to us from the 1600s, but we also continue to honour various accreditations granted to us more recently.
We are proud that our ethical farming practices have been recognised by the Organic Soil Association, and we are participating in a five-year Organic Environmental Stewardship Agreement that continues to shape the changing habitat of our land, and provide a richer natural environment for our sheep.
We have sown two hectares of Autumn Sown Bumble Bird Mixture that comprises 17 seed varieties, including Astera kale, ‘Leo’ Bird’s Foot Trefoil and Fodder Radish for insects and bird life to feast on. While the focus is on benefitting wildlife, it also enhances our already beautiful landscape.
Every other year, we grow our own silage to feed at lambing. In early Summer we plan to under sow a lupin and triticale mix with a herbal ley, which, with it’s carpet of vibrant blue and white, will attract insect life and provide delicious fodder.
People today are yearning for a connection to the land their products come from. This is a guiding principle for all we do here in our corner of paradise.
